National UFO Alert: Sightings 'spike' doubles state list

The National UFO ALERT Rating System has been updated September 8, 2011, with California, Florida, Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Colorado, and Arizona moving to a UFO Alert 3 as the highest reporting states during the month of July 2011, filed with the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). Kentucky, New Jersey, Washington, Georgia, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Kansas, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and Minnesota were placed in a UFO Alert 4 with 13 or more cases reported in August. Nevada, Virginia, Rhode Island, Louisiana, and Iowa have been designated "Watch States" - each with 10 or more cases.

A spike in UFO reporting for August caused the number of states in the Category 3 and 4 list - including the Watch States - to double - and in fact, most listed states UFO reports were double (or more) in August from their average UFO reports.

MUFON released August statistics September 1, where the total number of reported UFO sightings are listed by state. The UFO Examiner uses these statistics to rate states. The entire country was moved back to the lowest alert level - UFO Alert 5.

We're including the July UFO sighting totals here with the August totals to show the dramatic increase in reports.

California was the leading UFO report state again this month - with 127 cases - up from 54 last month - and remains in the UFO Alert 3 status with Florida, 69 (up from 25); Pennsylvania, 62 reports (up from 39); Texas, 59 reports (up from 30); New York, 46 (up from 14); Michigan, 44 (up from 15); Missouri, 39 (up from 18); Ohio, 38 (up from 15); Connecticut, 38 (up from 3); Illinois, 30 (down from 36); Indiana, 30 reports (up from 29); Colorado, 29 (up from 11); and Arizona, 26 reports (up from 9).

Those states with 13 or more reports, the next reporting tier level, are a UFO Alert 4 status: Kentucky, 22 (up from 9), New Jersey, 22 (up from 15), Washington, 22 (up from 14), Georgia, 20 (up from 10), North Carolina, 19 (up from 6), Oregon, 19 (remained the same from 19), Tennessee, 18 (up from 7), Oklahoma, 15 (up from 9), Kansas, 15 (up from 2), Massachusetts, 14 (up from 6), Wisconsin, 14 (up from 3), and Minnesota, 13 (up from 7).

While all other states move to a UFO Alert 5 status, we are also moving the following states into our Watch Group: Nevada, 12 (up from 2), Virginia, 12 (up from 9), Rhode Island, 11 (up from 3), Louisiana, 10 (up from 1) and Iowa, 10 (up from 8).

The most interesting UFO reports do not necessarily come from high reporting states - but those states with higher numbers do account for some of the most interesting evidence to study. While UFO sightings seem to pop up randomly around the country, this list is meant to offer a small insight into where Americans are filing reports.
